History of NADA Five Needles Ear Acupuncture

In 1972, Hsiang-Lai Wen made a groundbreaking discovery in Hong Kong: inserting needles into the ears can alleviate physical withdrawal symptoms from opium. The following year, Wen and Cheung published their findings in the Asian Journal of Medicine. By 1974, at Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx, New York, Dr. Michael O. Smith, MD, a psychiatrist and the medical director of the Lincoln Detox Program, began implementing ear acupuncture in the detox clinic. In 1982, Dr. Smith published an article in The American Journal of Acupuncture, detailing how five specific ear acupuncture points can help patients reduce drug withdrawal symptoms.
In 1985, Dr. Smith founded the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA).
